Rotorua District ICT Strategy

The Rotorua District ICT Strategy 2006-2009 aims to improve Rotorua people's use of communication technology. The Strategy is a joint initiative of the Rotorua Community ICT Trust, Rotorua District Council, Rotorua Social Services Council and Waiariki Institute of Technology. Funding for the consultation and strategic planning stage was provided by Rotorua District Council and the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust.

The vision of the Rotorua District ICT Strategy is “strong, safe and empowered Rotorua communities through sustainable use of information and communication technology (ICT).” The framework for the Strategy is based around more effective use of ICT (not necessarily more or better computers) to promote Rotorua's Community Outcomes. This incudes a focus on sustainable development and community well-being. The Strategy includes more than 30 Action Plans designed to promote positive community outcomes through better use of ICT.

A core part of the Strategy for 2007/08 is the employment of a Rotorua E-Rider, for which fund raising is under way. The E-Rider will have a combination of ICT experience and enthusiasm for working with Rotorua social service organisations. Key roles will include advising and mentoring community organisations on technology matters.

The Strategy is the basis for an application to the Community Partnerships Fund administered by the Department of Internal Affairs as part of the national Digital Strategy initiative.
